Hooray! You’re engaged and you’ve fully emerged in all things in the wedding world! That means it’s time for your engagement shoot. There are a ton of elements to making the most out of your engagement session. We’ll take you through them all. Last time, we talked about some of the best locations in NC for your engagement session. Now that you have a location, are you worried about how to choose an outfit for your engagement session? Today we’re going to focus on how to pick an outfit for your engagement photos!
1 – Think about your location
Once you’ve chosen a location(s) for your engagement session, then it’s time to think of an outfit that matches that scene. Shooting in downtown Charlotte? Then maybe, a classic glam look would be appropriate. Are you snuggling up at a cabin in the woods? A camping look would work.
Sometimes it’s okay to flip things around a bit and contrast your look with the location. Sometimes adding a dramatic dress & suit to a mountaintop makes the session even more epic than before!
2 – Coordinate but don’t match
Some couples like to coordinate their color schemes for their outfit. This can be done by adding similar tones to each other’s looks without being “matchy-matchy.” Think balance. Take the photo below for example. They’re both wearing blue tones. Grace’s striped dress is bolder and compliments Reed’s pale blue shirt while still being balanced with those dark blue jeans.
In the second photo, you’ll see that Katherine’s printed dress has pink floral accents which plays nicely off of Simon’s pink shirt.
3 – Be You
I know this tip sounds weird. How could you not be you, but you’d be surprised. Some couples think they have to look a certain way in their engagement photographs. Maybe, this is because mom & dad have given you their opinions on it. Perhaps, you’ve seen a friends session & loved it so much you wanted to try out something similar. Choose clothing that does not only make you feel like your best self but, also expresses who you are. When you look back at your photographs all you’ll see is your authentic self deeply in love!
4 – Show Off
This ties into the above tip. If you’re going to take the time to plan outfits & get all decked out for your session, then make sure you’re showing off a bit! Take this as an opportunity to flaunt what you love about yourself! We promise you’ll feel even more amazing during & after the session for it!
6 – Have options
Having a few options to wear at your session is helpful. Especially, if you’re planning multiple locations. This helps shift the feel of your photographs. You can go from fun to romantic, casual to glam, comfortable to a fun theme. The list is endless! This also gives you a bit of a fail-safe in case your opinion of the outfit changes. Clothes can photograph differently than we initially envision. Multiple outfits during the session will give you lots of wonderful options!
Bonus tips:
– Bring extra shoes – Especially if we’re going to do a lot of walking or hiking! You can always change into the shoes you want to shoot in when we get to the location.
– Dress in layers – You can always take away layers to create a different look. It’s also helpful for a quick change if there’s no changing room available.
