Every time I write one of these posts I am so amazed at how quickly time passes. This baby’s first year thing really boggles my mind. Wasn’t it just yesterday that I was hanging out with Lindsay  & Russell shooting their first baby’s newborn portraits? Seriously…time…SLOW DOWN…uhg. When I was little I couldn’t understand this need adults had to slow things down and now I totally get it.  Lindsay & Russell have been incredible supporters of MLP and I’m so grateful to have met them and documented so many wonderful memories for them to share. I love walking into their home and seeing my photography EVERYWHERE! It’s the best gallery a girl could have! Now they’re starting a new journey just like me! They’ve moved across the country for a great opportunity. I pray that they’re new chapter is just as wonderful as their last. I hope I get to see them again when I visit Cali next summer! WOOHOO! Anywho, let’s take a moment and review Russ Jr.’s first year in life. It sure was a happy one!

XOXOXO,
Mabyn

This is the last Canvas Contest related post, I promise! But, I just couldn’t leave things as they are.

Some of you may not have been aware, but there was some ballot stuffing going in in the contest that was brought to my attention. Not everyone responsible came forward, but the people that mattered did. Their heart felt apologies were accepted and their mistake forgiven. I chose to keep them in the contest as I felt that being generous was a better option than being condemning. I opted not to put up the winners on Monday, mostly because I was so heart broken over the matter in general.

This week has proven to be very emotionally demanding. I’m a generally happy person and it takes a lot to shake that happiness. So you may ask yourself the question, “Why is Mabyn so hung up over a canvas?” It’s true, from the outside looking in this might not be a big deal. Yet for me and my clients, this canvas represents something much more.

I pour my heart and soul into every single picture I take. I also try to put just as much love and attention into my clients. It brings me a ridiculous amount of joy to help each and every couple have a seamless photographic experience. Wedding photography is not just a job, it’s who I am. I am joyful, emotional, and loving just like my client’s weddings are. The thought of something negative being associated with my brand , aka ME, tears me up inside. Hear me on this one, it’s not because I can’t handle pressure or criticism or I’m worried for the integrity of my business. Those things are a part of life and I navigate those waters as they come. No, what my heart can’t bear is a client looking at a photograph that I have taken and only remembering a bad scenario in place of their amazing wedding day. This my friends is why I was so distraught.

When the contest ended, even though I stood (and still stand) by the choices I made, I felt empty. The joy I normally feel with delivering the prize was sapped out of me. Now that I’ve had time to reflect, I know it’s because my clients were so repentant and distraught about the scenario as a whole. This may sound silly to you, but it’s true. I can be empathetic almost to a fault. But now that the adrenaline and emotion has calmed a bit, I am able to see the “silver lining” in this whole experience.

The truth behind the epic battle that was this contest is that these clients wanted something SO badly they fought every way they knew how. No it may not have been the wisest way to fight, but they fought HARD! I’m actually incredibly flattered that the top 3 couples worked so actively to get votes. They contacted everyone they knew, told them to spread the word,  & some people even handed out fliers! It really blows my mind that this was so important to them.

I pray that my clients invest as much time and energy that they put into this contest into their marriage. I pray they fight tooth and nail to not only stay together, but FLOURISH together! Weddings are the beginning of the adventure that lies ahead and as a wedding photographer, I don’t often get to see past the first page of that story. Every married couple I know, that has been together beyond a few years, has confided in me that it takes HARD WORK. Love is more than just a feeling, it’s choosing to stay together, choosing to communicate, choosing to support, respect, and honor each other even when you may not want to. This my lovelies is my take away. My clients are willing to do whatever it takes for a thriving beautiful marriage. I pray that all of this is just a bookmark in their journey that they can say, I will fight for you with everything I’ve got!

I’m glad that I can now step back from everything and smile. Seemly bad scenarios can always be turned to good if we’re willing to work it through. I am now excited to announce that Katie & Tim are this years winners for the contest. I pray that every time they look at their lovely picture that they can say “I will fight for you, I love you that much!”

Mabyn

This is one of my most favorite times of year! It’s CANVAS GIVEAWAY TIME!!! WOOHOO!

Usually I do this right before Christmas, because I LOVE giving away presents! This year though, my schedule was a level of crazy that I was not prepared for. So here we are about a month after Christmas, but hey, belated presents are still presents and we love them ANY time of year!

This season we have 17 fantastic contestants! Here are the rules:

Vote once a day, every day, until midnight of January 26th. The couple with the most votes will win a free 16×24 canvas to feature in their home! Get your family, friends, coworkers, gym buddies, strangers on the street, etc…involved! The more people you can get to vote for you, the better your chances! Only votes on the actual poll at the bottom of this page will count. “Write in’s” on FB are not valid. I will announce the winner next Monday, January 27th.

Now I need to put in a disclaimer here, in past years there has been issues trying to vote from multiple devices. Sometimes you can, sometimes you can’t. I think it has to do with the ip address. If you have any issues voting, please contact me at MabynLudke@gmail.com.

The biggest joy for me is getting to document a wedding with all of my friends. I’ve gotten to do so many over the years, and even though most people would say don’t mix business with family & friends, I disagree. Granted, you still need to be wise in the people you book, but I’ve been blessed with incredible friends! Kassie & Harley are no exception to that rule. I met Harley at least 6 or 7 years ago when we were attending Faith Chapel. He was still in high school and we all attended a young adults group together. Harley is a practical joker, always with a punch line and a smirk on his face. When he met Kassie, I was pretty sure there was no one else for him. He looked at her in a way that I hadn’t seen yet, and she returned it in kind. Kassie is a great balance to Harley’s jovial nature. Her tender heart and sweet spirit makes them a fantastic couple!

Their wedding day was a mix of rustic elegance. The Bayshore Grove in Oswego, NY was the perfect spot for their day. They didn’t get the epic sunset that they feature, clouds tend to put a damper on such things, but that didn’t stop us from creating some epic wedding shots! There were some especially sweet moments between Harley, Kassie, and their family members, as everyone soaked in their love for one another! And as always with my crew of friends, the party was rockin’ that night. With stories, laughter, and dancing  abundant! Thank you so much Kassie & Harley! It was such an honor to be there and capture it all for you!

XOXOXO,
Mabyn

How did your fiance propose? He took me out for ice cream (my fav) in skaneattles. I thought something was up because we never go there just for ice cream. After we were done eating we took a walk on the pier and I could tell that he was nervous and acting funny. Something in me knew he was gonna pop the question but I looked at his pocket and didn’t see a box for a ring. So that thought quickly left my mind. We left the pier and started walking till we found a beautiful bench / whispering wall. We sat down and talked and next thing I knew he was down on one knee and asked me if I’d marry him!!! And I said NO! Can you believe it?? I thought he was joking. He completely took me by surprise and I couldn’t believe it was happening. Once I pulled it together and stopping crying I told him yes! I would love nothing more than to be his wife.
Tell me a bit about the planning process for your wedding: We fell in love with our venue instantly! I always wanted an outdoor fall wedding by the water and Bayshore gave me exactly that. It was everything I was looking for! It was quite a drive out there and it seemed like it was in the middle of nowhere but as soon as we got there I knew it was perfect!
What was the most memorable moment(s) of your day? I will never forget when I first saw Harley standing there in his tux surrounded by our friends and family. The look on his face .. I can’t even describe it :0) it was such an amazing moment. I also had an amazing moment with my oldest brother. I hadn’t seen him for quite some time and we were able to have a brother/sister dance. That meant a lot to me.
Funniest memory from your wedding day? Where do I begin..?First I put Harley’s ring on the wrong hand, then Harley said “I do” way before it was time, and we totally messed up the sand unity thing. But all those little tiny mistakes is what made the ceromony great and memorable. It also kept our guests entertained.
If you had to do it all over again would you change anything? I would make sure we had communion. Somehow there was a mess up and we didn’t get to do communion.
Any advice for future bride & grooms? Don’t sweat the small stuff!
What was your favorite part about working with Mabyn Ludke Photography? Mabyn is amazing and captures every moment perfectly! She is so kind and funny and really good at her job. Love her!!
